Heart-to-Heart Connection

MSG Otherwise Known As … (Yikes!)

What do you do when you see the word MSG on the food label?  Buy the product or go elsewhere?

I thought I had MSG (known to cause everything from nausea to shortness of breath) at bay as long as I didn’t see the word Monosodium Glutamate on the food label.

Wrong!

Sneaky, greedy, food companies.  They’ve found a way around FDA’s regulation — simply rename the seasoning — with more names than one:

  • Glutamic Acid
  • Hydrolyzed protein
  • Autolyzed protein
  • Textured protein
  • Yeast extract
  • Autolyzed yeast extract
  • Protein isolate  (Full Story)

None of us should have to double-check ingredient lists with a de-coder booklet, but these companies’ bottom lines are to supply a good tasting product and make money, not to improve your health. (Indigo Earth)

Buyers beware!

  1. Hey,

I am as fed up as you are with the numerous names out there for the one ingredients. It’s like hiding trans fats in hydrogenated vegetable oils!

I recently wrote a post about the effects of MSG. Thought it would work quite nicely with your post. You can check it out at http://tiny.cc/uQGMA.

would love to know your thoughts.

    Cheers,

    Dx
