PowerPoint Makes You Dumb?

I never thought of it that way.

PowerPoint is the only software I’ve used for presentations.

Just choose a template, type the main idea, and few bullets summarizing key points. Thanks to Microsoft, no need to think about colors or design layout. It’s already done.

Time is money – faster and easier the better.

Dr. Edward Tufte, the famous theorist of information presentation, begs to differ.

Dr. Tufte claimed, “Microsoft’s ubiquitous software forces people to mutilate data beyond comprehension … PowerPoint also encourages users to rely on bulleted lists, a ‘faux-analytical’ style.”

Really? Dr. Tufte, aren’t you being a bit harsh?

Are you saying “I can’t hide behind the PowerPoint’s charts and bullets and glitz and glamour and say a whole lot of nothing?”

There’s only 24 hours in a day.  I can’t cut corners on ideas.  Layout ought to be THE place for shortcuts.  If not, where and how do I save time?!
