Women’s Number One Killer — Heart Disease

Did you know heart disease kills one in every four women — friend, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter — you or someone you know (well)!

But fear not.  Knowledge is power. We can enjoy long active lives if we understand the symptoms, work on prevention, and lead healthy lifestyle (of course we will)!

Here are the facts:


  • Chest pain
  • Pain radiating to the jaw, arm, and shoulders
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive sweating


  • Don’t smoke
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Control blood pressure (exercise and eat a low-fat diet)
  • Control cholesterol level (exercise and eat a low-fat diet)
  • Be aware of chest pain and other symptoms (see Symptoms)
  • Know your family history


  • Aspirin – thins the blood reducing the risk of blood clot, however, consult your doctor for gastrointestinal bleeding and other problems.  These side affects may have serious consequences.
  • Estrogen (Hormone) Replacement Therapy – help minimize symptoms of menopause and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, but doctors caution using HRT to prevent heart disease.
