Deception Detection — Nine Ways to Know When People are Lying

“Liars, liars, pants on fire!”  Most of the time, but not always.

Some people are great liars.  Some will play along — pretend to be deceived — for harmless white lies.  (If a homeless child says Santa gave him tons of presents, so be it.  The child can dream.  Why interrogate?)

But for the most part, with the exception of those in denial, we don’t want to be duped.  So here are nine ways to guard ourselves from liars:

What to look for in others:

  • Body Language – sweating and fidgeting
  • Protest – Defensive, negative comments
  • Avoids eye contact
  • Stress – dilated pupils, vocal pitch rises
  • Pauses – beat or two to collect thoughts

What we can do:

  • Ask for details
  • Ask again
  • Hone Intuition
  • Know Thyself – negative or positive, we find what we want to find.  Know what to look for.

Having said all this, I still believe in saving face.  If we know the person has lied, why corner the individual any further … unless you’ve never told a lie (are you human?!).

Life is gray; very gray.  I’m definitely not interrogator-material.  I’ll let the pros do their job (and I am grateful).  For the most part, they keep the worst of the worst off our streets.
