READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/18)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Esther 1:1-3:15  King Ahasuerus of Persia personally chose Esther to become his wife and queen.  The king was smitten by her beauty and intelligence.  Mordecai, Esther’s uncle, refuses to bow down to Haman, the king’s high official.  Angry prideful Haman vows to destroy Mordecai and his people, the Jews.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34  Apostle Paul instructs believers on the meaning of the Lord’s Supper.  This’ is not the time to feast & get drunk.  The Lord’s Supper is the time to reflect, remember, and proclaim God’s ultimate sacrifice for our sins.

Psalm 35:17-28  King David prays fervently for deliverance from his enemies; from their ploys to destroy him and his people.

Proverbs 21:19-20  It is better to live alone in the desert than with a quarrelsome, complaining wife.  The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.

Philanthropy: The Difference Between Enabling and Empowerment

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.  (Chinese Proverb)

Over the years, billions of dollars in aid have poured from the developed to developing nations.  Yet 80 percent of our world’s population live on less than $10 per day.

Why?

Perhaps one answer to this complicated issue may lie in enabling — temporary relief — not empowerment.

Temporary reliefs are handouts.  They’re necessary, especially in life or death situations.  Basic needs — shelter, food, and water — must be met before improving lives. Once immediate needs are met, however, should additional donations continue to simply feed and clothe its recipients?

Are such acts of “kindness” empowering the people or are handouts in the name of “donations” degrading creative minds and resilient spirits into beggars and dependents?

In The Power of Half: One Family’s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back, the Salwens sold their house and gave away $800,000 to the Hunger Project in Ghana; to equip and empower its people to take back their lives and become self-sufficient:

(Click for video)

We go back into the villages of Ghana [where my family and I invested our funds], and this time the chief hands us a list of things they have accomplished.  ‘Look what we’ve done.’  They are proud of their own activities.  Oh, this is good.  [Empower, not enable].  We are making progress.

The Salwens asked five questions before committing to their work in Ghana:

  • Will our work empower or be a Band-Aid?
  • Do we respect the culture? Do we have enough humility to see our new partners/recipients as equals?
  • Are those partners fully engaged in designing the project?
  • Are we doing this work for the same reasons as our partners, the folks we’re trying to help? Do we have a different agenda?
  • Are we committed for the long haul?  Change does not happen overnight.

Steep learning curve, for me, anyway.  But each of us can make a small difference.  Lots of small differences will result in change!

If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito.  (Anita Roddick)

To enable or to empower … THAT is the question.  🙂

The U.S. Food Industry — Faster, Fatter, Bigger, Cheaper, Death! (II)

Who ever imagined eating would become life-threatening?!

When big businesses and government look solely after their self interests, the populace are screwed.

A two-year-old dies from E. Coli infested meat. Who cares? Profit over life.  Money is THE ONLY “LANGUAGE” greed understands.

(Why have two-party systems?  Forget Democrats and Republicans.  Once in power, most simply pursue their self interests.  Why not call “Spade” a “Spade” — the “Have Conscience” and the “Don’t Have Conscience.”)

Food, Inc. reveals chilling realities:

  • Chickens stuffed in dark “growing houses” — no space to move, no space for exercise, smeared in feces.  Cows, too. Feces halfway up their legs!  Wonder why more people aren’t dropping dead left and right from food poisoning?!
  • Mexicans lured by American meat corporations at $8 to $10 per hour wages; entering the country illegally, enduring inhumane working conditions. Corporate big shots are never charged.  Just the hardworking undocumented workers brought to the plants by their cut throat employers.  (Former corporate employees hold powerful government positions.  One of the many dirty secrets between government and corporations — fattening their wallets and taking advantage of the people and consumers they supposedly serve).
  • Working class families are getting sick from $1 meals and other cheap, high sodium, nutritionally poor, fast foods. Bread winners on costly medications are choosing to eat cheaply, not healthy.  Consequences — illness, high prescription costs, tight budgets, unhealthy food choices, cheap processed foods, more sickness.
  • Farmers who take on the food industry giants face emotional and financial bankruptcy — silenced, alone, jobless.

The vicious cycle — greed and intimidation — continue.

Until now … KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

Strength lies in numbers.  No demand, no supply.  Look at the tobacco industry!

Food industry, you’re next!

Consumers, it’s time to DEMAND safe, quality, real food.  The time is NOW.  Take matters into our own hands.  We want our health back!  We want our lives back!

Whose side are you on, “Have conscience” or “Don’t have conscience?”

IT’S A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH!  SPREAD THE WORD!

MSG Otherwise Known As … (Yikes!)

What do you do when you see the word MSG on the food label?  Buy the product or go elsewhere?

I thought I had MSG (known to cause everything from nausea to shortness of breath) at bay as long as I didn’t see the word Monosodium Glutamate on the food label.

Wrong!

Sneaky, greedy, food companies.  They’ve found a way around FDA’s regulation — simply rename the seasoning — with more names than one:

  • Glutamic Acid
  • Hydrolyzed protein
  • Autolyzed protein
  • Textured protein
  • Yeast extract
  • Autolyzed yeast extract
  • Protein isolate  (Full Story)

None of us should have to double-check ingredient lists with a de-coder booklet, but these companies’ bottom lines are to supply a good tasting product and make money, not to improve your health. (Indigo Earth)

Buyers beware!

Healthy Portions, Healthy Life!

What’s the best way to stay fit and healthy — exercise, enough sleep, lowering stress, or high fiber/low fat diet?

If you love to eat, like me, portion control (plus all of the above) may be your ticket to a healthy lifestyle.

My parents and I live 6,000 miles apart.  I see them once every two to three years.  Last time, we met half way, in Kauai.  Phone conversations keep us connected.  But nothing beats seeing mom and dad face-to-face.

Mom is one of the bluntest people I know.  She calls “spade” a “SPADE.”  Her first sentence after three years, “You gained so much weight.  What are you doing to yourself?!”

Mom is five feet, 110 lb.  Me?  Five feet, 140 lb.

For the last two weeks, I’ve tried eating like mom — diet rich in fiber and protein (fish and white meat only), and SMALLER PORTIONS (the first day I thought I’d faint eating half of what I was used to eating … but after a few days, my stomach shrank.  My body adapted).

Children’s portion (American size) is all what most adults need. I felt great!

I’ve also returned to weighing myself daily (I avoided the scale for six months and gained 12 pounds)!

“In Japan, you’d have to look long and hard to find someone 5 foot tall 140 lb wide.  Feel free to visit when you lose 30 lb.”  Those were mom’s last words before she boarded the plane for home.

I’m not getting younger.  Neither are my parents (74 and 70-years-old).  I want to see them more often.

I’m on a mission to lose 30 lb in 12 months.  Wish me LOTS of luck!

If you know of successful dieting tips, share away!  I’d appreciate your input (Please, no diet pills.  I’ve experienced horrendous side effects).  🙂

Someday, we’ll all be centenarians — pursuing our passion with the people we love!

Here are eight simple secrets to living longer, better:

  • Believe (spiritual or religious participation)

  • Eat until 80 percent full
  • Drink one or two glasses of red wine each day (antioxidant — Polyphenol — scrubs away artery clogging materials)

How to Heal a Heavy Heart

Do what you absolutely love!

If you’re so low on energy that staying awake becomes an insurmountable chore, curl up in bed and do nothing (I’ve been there.  For ten years, depression was my “best friend” and I didn’t even know it).  Over time, the body will generate enough energy.

If you’re like me where depression is caused by lack of serotonin, a daily dose of anti-depressant does wonders!  Chemical or situational, doing what you love WILL lift your spirits!  AND positive energy attracts positive energy.  Upbeat spirits will attract like-hearts and like-minds!

Take it from 11-year-old Aaron who spiraled down into depression after the death of his twin brother.  Aaron got his life back by following his pediatrician’s advice, “Do what you love!”  (see video)

Overwhelmed?  Too many things on your plate?  The hell with responsibilities!!!!  It’s Saturday.  DO WHAT YOU LOVE!  You deserve it!  You’re worth it!

I’m getting together with friends and eat a burrito.  Yum!

How about you?

Enjoy your weekend! 🙂
