READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/18)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Esther 1:1-3:15  King Ahasuerus of Persia personally chose Esther to become his wife and queen.  The king was smitten by her beauty and intelligence.  Mordecai, Esther’s uncle, refuses to bow down to Haman, the king’s high official.  Angry prideful Haman vows to destroy Mordecai and his people, the Jews.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34  Apostle Paul instructs believers on the meaning of the Lord’s Supper.  This’ is not the time to feast & get drunk.  The Lord’s Supper is the time to reflect, remember, and proclaim God’s ultimate sacrifice for our sins.

Psalm 35:17-28  King David prays fervently for deliverance from his enemies; from their ploys to destroy him and his people.

Proverbs 21:19-20  It is better to live alone in the desert than with a quarrelsome, complaining wife.  The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.

I’m Spending My Kids’ Inheritence

How would you respond to this bumper sticker — “Right on!” or “How selfish!”

Billionaire Warren Buffett will say “Right on!” every time.  Why?

“In life, you’re not entitled to a free ride.” ”Money or life?  I chose life.” “Life is what you make it .”

Do you know of a family or two who no longer speak to one another after fighting over their inheritance?  If parents leave nothing, children may resent mom and dad.  So what?!  They’re already at a much better place.  Resent all you want.

More importantly, families who continue to inhabit the land of the living will have an ongoing relationship — birthday parties, Thanksgiving dinners, and all that jazz!

“Give enough [to your children] but not enough to do nothing.”

Mr. Buffet, you are brilliant!

Christians — Who Are We?

Christmas always brings me back to that special place — 16 years ago, when I accepted Jesus into my life.

Prior to becoming a believer, I viewed some Christians as kind; most to be hypocritical, sheltered, anti-homosexual, and some, way too judgmental (“If you don’t believe in Jesus, you’ll go to hell.”  Oh please, we’re all sinners.  “I’m holier than thou” attitude will surely turn away non-believers from God’s magnificent presence and His glory.)

The kindness of Christians, who accepted and loved me at my most vulnerable moments — as parents would their children, as Jesus has for humankind — moved my hardened, skeptical heart to understand: love was superior to power; grace, not condemnation, was the answer to change.

Sixteen years later, I find myself often falling short of being that kind, bold Christian Jesus models in the BIBLE.

SATAN plants the idea that it’s out level of smarts and our willingness to live with people who are sinners that makes us better.  But it’s always the Holy Spirit.  It’s Jesus in us who does it.

The bold proclamation of the gospel always comes from a heart of love, a heart of understanding about our own debt to God.  He has forgiven us everything, so we have no right to lord it over people who just don’t see that yet. (Dr. Charles Stanley, Nov. 2009)

Who am I to judge?

Lord, give me the wisdom and the courage to be perfectly bold AND perfectly sensitive — willing to tell God’s truth; willing to extend His grace.

Amen 🙂

Woman of Virtue

Thank you Lord for your infinite wisdom!

A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.
She gets up while it’s still dark; providing food for her family and portions for her servant girls.
She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
Her husband is respected at the city gate, taking his seat among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

Heroes

(First posted on Dec. 20)

Heroes defined their  heroes as “Those who overcome adversity, demonstrating attitudes of gratitude, those who work for a cause much higher and bigger than themselves, and individuals who walk the talk.”

Words cannot even begin to express my gratitude for my perfect hero.  I am in awe of His amazing love!

Who’s your hero? (see also Heroes Among Us)

Wear Chocolate on Valentine’s Day!

If you’re looking for a way to spice up your love life on Valentine’s Day (or on any other day) why not wear chocolate? Create a memory to last a lifetime!

In addition to romance, here’s one more reason to include chocolate in your life:

Research has shown that when dark chocolate is part of a healthy diet, it can improve heart health, blood pressure, reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol, and increase blood flow to the brain. It may also improve blood sugar and insulin sensitivity, reducing diabetes risk.

Christmas Blessings

If you can hold someone’s hand, hug them, or even touch them on the shoulder … you are blessed because you can offer a healing touch.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish somewhere, you are among the top 8 percent of the world’s wealthy.

If you wake up this morning with more health than illness … you are more blessed than the millions who will not survive this week.

How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong.  Because someday in your life you will have been all of these. ~ George Washington Carver

Merry Christmas.
