TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Song of Solomon 1:1-4:16  King Solomon and His New Bride Rejoice in Their Love.  Solomon, a son of King David became king.  While visiting a vineyard, Solomon is swept away by the young peasant woman working the vines.  The king seeks the woman’s hand in marriage.  Casting her insecurities aside, she eventually consents.  Solomon’s wife longed for the security of his presence.  The basis of true love is commitment.  A relationship built on true love is void of deceit, manipulation, or exploitation.

2 Corinthians 8:16-24  Apostle Paul Sends Cohort, Titus, to Receive Collection from the Corinthian Congregation.  Following the Lord’s examples, Christians are called to be generous; a stingy Christian should be extinct; however, sacrificial giving must be responsible.  Give until it hurts but not to the point where it hurts the financial needs of your family and relatives. Paul used every safeguard to maintain integrity in the collection of money for the Jerusalem church.  Christians must have the highest standard of financial responsibility.

Psalm 50:1-23  WISDOM: TO FEAR AND HONOR GOD.  Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:  Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation.

Proverbs 22:22-23  Advocate for the poor.  Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Ecclesiastes 10:1-12:14  Wisdom for Life.  A wise person chooses the right road; a fool takes the wrong one.  If your boss is angry at you, don’t quit!  A quiet spirit can overcome even great mistakes.  Kings and rulers make a grave mistake when they give great authority to fools and low positions to the wise … Conclusion: Fear God and obey His commands, for this is everyone’s duty.  God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, good and bad.

2 Corinthians 8:1-15  Give joyfully.  Your giving should not make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. There should be some equality.  Right now you have plenty and can help those in need. Later, they’ll have plenty and can share when you’re in need. In this way, things will be equal.

Psalm 49:1-20  Faith vs. Wealth.  In the morning the godly will rule over the rich.  The rich bodies will rot in the grave, far from their grand estates.  But as for me, God will redeem my life … When the rich die, they take nothing.  In this life, they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success.  But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day.  People who boast of their wealth will die, like animals.

Proverbs 22:20-21  Sayings of the Wise.  I have written thirty sayings for you,  filled with advice and knowledge.  In this way, you may know the truth and take an accurate report to those who sent you.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Ecclesiastes 4:1-6:12  On the Advantages of Companionship, Wisdom and the Futility of Chasing Political Power and Wealth, Keep All Promises to God, God Has Decided Our Destiny.  King Solomon knew, the ones who needed this book were least likely to read it. They were busy enjoying life — wildly driving towards a cliff.  Solomon substituted powerful statements that would seize reader’s attention and slowly turn them back to God.  Solomon also shared his own conclusions.

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:7  Work toward holiness.  Fear the Lord.  Apostle Paul warns Christians not to team up with unbelievers for righteousness cannot partner with wickedness, and to work toward complete holiness for fear of the Lord.  Apostle Titus informs Paul the Corinthians have repented from their evil ways.  Paul is elated.

Psalm 47:1-9  Praise be to God our Almighty King!  For God is the King over all the earth.  God reigns above the nations, sitting on His holy throne.  The rulers of the world have gathered with the people of the God of Abraham.  For all the kings of the earth belong to God.  He is highly honored.

Proverbs 22:16  A person who gets ahead by oppressing the poor or by showering gifts on the rich will end in poverty.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 40:1-42:17  God’s Divine Purpose — All things work together for our good and His glory.  Job was the Lord’s servant who delighted in His ways. The Lord allowed Job to be tested and Job overcame, not by works, but by the Lord’s grace. In the end, the Lord’s favor upon Job saved him.  Job sought out the Lord continually, crying for help and justice.   Despite all trials, Job knew God loved Him, as he quickly repented upon hearing the Lord.  Job’s friends, however, could only see the surface.  Misfortunes, to them, meant a wicked heart. God is merciful and loving. Affliction is not God’s judgment.  He has a purpose for everything.  Let us trust in God who works all things for His Divine Glory.

2 Corinthians 5:11-21   Christians are God’s Ambassadors.  Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthian Church, “We are God’s Ambassadors.  Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard with a sincere heart to persuade others. Christ’s love controls us.  Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.  He died for everyone so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.”

Psalm 45:1-17  The Wedding Psalm– The promise of marriage is intimacy and security.  These two are present in our relationship with the Lord.  The Psalm closes on such note—leading us in the security that we enjoy with the Lord in His palace.

Proverbs 22:14  Immorality and God’s Wrath.  The mouth of an immoral woman is a dangerous trap; those who anger the Lord will fall into the trap.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 4:1-7:21  Job’s friends give him plenty of bad advice. They mistakenly blame his sufferings–Job’s dead workers, dead animals, and illness–on his personal sins rather than God testing and growing Job.  Job cries out to God, “If I have sinned, what have I done to you?  Why make me your target?   Why not just forgive my sin and take away my guilt?  For soon I will lie down in the dust and die.   When you look for me, I will be gone.”

1 Corinthians 14:18-40  Apostle Paul encourages Christians, “My dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues.  But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.”

Psalm 37:30-40  Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace.  But the rebellious will be destroyed; they have no future.

Proverbs 21:27  The sacrifice of an evil person is detestable, especially when offered with wrong motives.

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/20)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Esther 8:1-10:3  The Festival of Purim celebrates Queen Esther’s courage for saving her people.  Haman, the king’s high official, is hung by King Ahasuerus’ (Xerxes) men for plotting to kill the Jews, Queen Esther’s people.  The king gave Haman’s property to Esther.  He also issued a decree, allowing the Jews to unite to defend themselves.  Mordecai, the queen’s uncle, is appointed prime minister of Persia.  He was highly regarded by the Jewish people for serving and representing the people’s best interests.

1 Corinthians 12:27-13:13  If I do not have love, I gain nothing.  Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Psalm 37:1-11  Trust in the Lord and do good … and He will give you the desires of your heart.  Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret —it leads only to evil.  For those who are evil will be destroyed but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.  A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Proverbs 21:23-24  Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.  The proud and arrogant—“Mocker”—behaves with insolent fury.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Nehemiah 11:1-12:26  The rebuilding of the wall was not simply about brick and mortar but about reestablishing the Lord’s sovereignty. The people (Jews) commended all volunteers; those who helped restore the walls of Jerusalem and resettled there.  The Jewish leaders lived in Jerusalem, the holy city. A tenth of the people from the other towns of Judah and Benjamin were chosen by sacred lots to live there, too, while the rest stayed where they were.
1 Corinthians 10:14-33  Apostle Paul warns believers to flee idolatry — that which we desire other than the Lord (power, money, status, pride, etc.).  You cannot please God and the devil.  Do not eat food offered to idols.
Psalm 34:11-22  Turn away from evil and do good.  The righteous person faces many troubles,  but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.  The Lord will redeem those who serve Him.  No one who takes refuge in Him will be condemned.
Proverbs 21:14-16  A quietly given gift soothes an irritable person;   a heartfelt present cools a hot temper. Justice is a joy to the godly, but terrifies evildoers.  (NLT)   The person who strays from common sense will end up in the company of the dead.  (NLT)

Nehemiah 9:22-10:39  REBELLION and SIN; COVENANT and REDEMPTION.  God is patient and merciful but He will not let evil go unpunished.   (The ongoing saga between the Israelite/Jews/The Chosen People and God, and God and humanity.  The Jews pledge not to neglect the house of God.)
1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13  Apostle Paul commits himself to winning people over to Christ.  Flee idolatry – gluttony, sexual immorality, etc.  God will provide a way out of temptation.  He will not give you more than you can bear.
Psalm 34:1-10  Fear the Lord, our Almighty, Faithful, Divine Creator.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Nehemiah 7:73-9:21    True faith leads to action.  The rebuilding of the wall was not simply about brick and mortar but about reestablishing the Lord’s sovereignty.  Ezra preaches to the returned exiles, marking the outbreak of spiritual revival — public proclamation of Scriptures, feasting, fasting, confession, prayer, worshipful recital of God’s ongoing deliverance for Israel, and God’s people’s humble plea for forgiveness and restoration.

1 Corinthians 9:1-18  Apostle Paul gives up his rights i.e., payment for preaching.  “God has given me this sacred trust.  My pay is the opportunity to preach the Good News without charging anyone.”

Psalm 31:12-22  Our hope is in you alone.  But the Lord watches over those who fear Him,  those who rely on His unfailing love.  He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine.  We put our hope in the Lord.  He is our help and our shield

Proverbs 21:11-12  Become wise.  God will punish the wicked.  If you punish a mocker, the simpleminded become wise; if you instruct the wise, they will be all the wiser.  The Righteous One knows what is going on in the homes of the wicked; He will bring disaster on them.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Nehemiah 5:14-7:73 With Persian King Artaxerxes permission, Nehemiah, the king’s cup-bearer, returns to Jerusalem and leads a team of builders to reconstruct the walls of Jerusalem (devastated by the Babylonians in 586 BC) .  Despite much pagan oppositions, this monumental task is completed in 52 days, shocking many enemies.  Nehemiah registers the people.  Ezra, the high priest, reads the law.

1 Corinthians 8:1-13  It is love that strengthens the church.  Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.  But the person who loves God is the one whom God recognizes.

Psalm 33:1-11  For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything He does.  He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.  Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of Him.  For when He spoke, the world began!  It appeared at His command.

Proverbs 21:8-10  The guilty walk a crooked path; the innocent travel a straight road. It’s better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home. Evil people desire evil; their neighbors get no mercy from them.
