Dance Your Way to Success — Love, Respect, Dignity, Teamwork

“If you believe in yourself, you have what it takes to win.  You can get whatever you want . . . Show up and get it.”

“To do anything is hard . . . Even if you find the place to assign blame, problems don’t go away”

“If a woman allows me to lead, she’s trusting me.  More than that, she’s trusting herself.  If your 16-year-old daughter is strong and secure and trust herself, how likely would she let some idiot knock her up?  And if your son learns to touch a girl with respect, how will he treat women throughout his life? . . .”

“So, ladies and gentlemen, this is what I do here.  I teach dance.  WITH DANCE AND ITS SET OF RULES, WE TEACH YOUR KIDS LOVE, RESPECT, TEAMWORK, and DIGNITY; that which would help give them the vision of the future they could have.  THE VISION OF THE FUTURE THEY COULD HAVE.”  (6:30-7:46)

“I’m not interested so much in teaching ballroom dancing techniques. What’s important is the civility that ballroom dancing can bring . . . courtesy, respect, and dignity.”  (Pierre Dulaine, educator, founder, Dulaine Method)

Good News About Your Strong-Willed Child: Firm Foundation. Don’t Rescue. Get A Life. (10/10)

It’s natural for parents to become overly involved in their children.  Family is important; however, when parents look for their identity needs to be met in their children — meaning, purpose, challenge, and joy — family friction and codependency take over healthy family dynamics.  (Dr. Randy Reynolds, Child Psychologist)

In other words, parents, don’t live through your child.  Get a life.  Work on issues, challenges, dreams, goals . . . Hmm . . . Much easier said than done.

Taking risks, changing, (possible) failure . . . they CAN be scary.  It’s easier to blame someone else (e.g., a strong-willed child) for life’s difficulties than own up to our deficiencies.

But life’s lessons we choose to ignore will resurface until we learn.  Do we learn now, later, or never?

Healthy parents, healthy kids — happiness!

I want to LIVE my life; my goals.  I want my family, too!

Gonna get ’em all!

CHARGE!!!  🙂

Good News About Your Strong-Willed Child: Building Positive Dynamics (9/10)

How would you describe your family dynamics?  Critical, achievement-oriented, efficient?  Warm, secure, caring, stimulating?

Which would you prefer?  Which would you strive towards?

The latter, most likely.  We all thrive in warm and caring environment — children, especially.

So, how do we get there?

  • Meet Needs—Give attention, security, a sense of belonging, touch, affection, and stimulation.
  • Know Your Child—Play!  Be a good listener.  Spend deep, quality time.  Enjoy your child(ren).
  • Believe in Your Child—By doing so, parents provide opportunity and courage for her to fulfill your new, positive expectations.
  • Allow Independence—Teach your child to think and take personal responsibility.
  • Remain Calm and Detached—Empty ourselves of anger, resentment, fear, and guilt.

Here are concepts in action:

Child:    I got a bad evaluation from the teacher today.  If she was any good, I’d ace this class! (Negative invitation)

Parent: So she’s good at preventing her students from learning?

Child:    Well, she doesn’t help me learn!

Parent: So what would help you learn and do well in her class?  (Positive invitation/Problem-solve)

Child:    I don’t know, maybe a tutor.  (Response)

Parent: We could find a tutor for that class, but what about missed assignments?

Child:    Yeah, I’ve missed some.  I’ll finish them.

As always, thanks Dr. Reynolds!  🙂

America — Struggles and Hopes Inside Foster Care

All a kid needs is one person to hang on to, to listen, to care, to show up consistently.  (Dr. Maureen Brennan, psychiatrist of residential treatment facility)

Imagine … abandonment, sexual abuse, lies, secrets, guilt, shame, drugs, distrust, nightmares.

Imagine … Help!  Hope!  Healing!

In America, more than half a million kids are in foster care.  Once they reach 18 and age out of the system, only two out of ten will make it.  Others will end up homeless, in prison or dead.

We can do better.  We must.  These kids don’t belong to someone else.  These kids belong to all of us.  They are America’s children.  THEY ARE AMERICA.

Life’s Landmines

Dr. Charles Stanley’s Landmines in the Path of the Believer (6:34) shared eight life’s landmines.  They are:

  • Pride
  • Sexual Sin
  • Discouragement
  • Covetousness
  • Insecurity
  • Jealousy
  • Fear

How can we arm ourselves against these landmines?

According to Dr. Stanley, “Put on the armor of God — study and remain in God’s word, acknowledge, confess, repent, and seek wise counsel.”

I have my spiritual work cut out for the rest of my life!

USS New York — Ship Recovered From 9/11

“She may suffer damage but she will never know defeat.” (Ronald Sugar, Chairman and CEO, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems)

On Sept. 9, 2003, steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, L.A.

“When the ship’s bow section was poured into molds, big rough steel workers treated the metal with total reverence.”  (Navy Captain Kevin Wensing)

“It was a spiritual moment for everybody.  When the steel first arrived, I touched it and the hair on my neck stood up.  They knocked us down but they can’t keep us down.  We’re going to be back.”  (Junior Chavers, Foundry Operations Manager).

Additional facts on USS New York

  • Built with 7.5 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center
  • Designed for missions including special operations against terrorists
  • Able to carry 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft
  • Ship’s motto — Never Forget

God bless the USA!

Men’s Health — Relationships, Guy Wisdom, Fitness, and More!

Men’s health — it’s a hot topic!  We want our man to be healthy; to enjoy life — family, hobby, sports, job — with freedom from pain and injury.

Healthy bodies and healthy minds require communication and (some) effort.  They just don’t happen.

A typical male refuses to see his doctor.  A typical male detests a nagging wife (or his significant other) more than the doctor.  Anyway, that’s my experience.  If you know of ways to get your honey to become health-wise, share away!

The other day, I came across Men’sHealth magazine; articles targeting men and striking up male heart-to-heart connection (there are several tips on improving communication between men and women)!

Click the tabs at the top of Men’sHealth website:

Share your thoughts and experiences on ways to encourage men to take responsibility for their health and their lives! 🙂

What is Success — Find the Joy in Your Life

We come into this world with nothing.  We leave this world with nothing.  And somewhere in between, we become consumed by the glitz and glamor of status and stuff.

But life doesn’t have to be about one-upsmanship and material wealth.

Bucket List is a story of a wealthy hospital administrator and an auto mechanic with nothing in common except terminal illness.  Watch how they come to terms with their reality and with life’s most important treasures:

In the March edition of In Touch, Dr. Charles Stanley states the four harmful effects of pursuit of status:

  • Status is deceptive — status is based on the belief that we can and should compare ourselves to others to validate our self-worth.  God didn’t create us to be superior or inferior.  He created us to be unique and to fulfill His specific purpose for our lives.
  • Status divides — status encourages artificial divisions between people and communities.  Inflated egos believe certain jobs are beneath them.
  • Status hinders God from fully utilizing our gifts and potentials — we have no business telling the Lord what we will or will not do when He asks us to obey (Joseph served in prison for many years.  He didn’t think working as a prisoner was beneath him.)
  • Status is disappointing — beauty, intelligence, wealth, creativity — all disappear.  Why spend so much time trying to compete and outdo others?  No friends, all enemies.

Dr. Stanley concludes, “God’s leadership is always best.  You trust that even if He sends you to do what is poor and lowly in the world’s eyes, He is working in you to produce fruit that is priceless from the viewpoint of eternity … He calls you to love, serve wherever He sends you to serve, and be all He has created you to be.  Serving God is the only way to truly experience the fulfillment, significance, and joy which your heart yearns.”

Amen!  I’d greatly appreciate your prayers.  My prayers are with you, too.
