TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 31:1-33:33  Job continues to moan about his suffering and how the Lord does not answer.  According to Job, he has pursued the Lord, feared Him, and kept His ways.  Job’s three friends stop talking to him. Elihu, his fourth friend, also argues it is not right for Job to say he is not without sin.

2 Corinthians 3:1-18  Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthian congregation, “God has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life …And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

Psalm 43:1-5  King David, in hiding, is discouraged but regains composure by choosing to place his hope and praise in God!

Proverbs 22:8-9  Those who plant injustice will harvest disaster and their reign of terror will come to an end.  Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 28:1-30:31  Job speaks what the Lord has said to man, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of understanding.” Job recalls his early days while walking with the Lord and the good works he performed earning glory among men. People listened to Job’s wisdom due to his great success. Now, the same people mock Job, men younger than he, whose father Job would have disdained.  Job continues to moan about his suffering and the Lord’s (perceived) silence.

2 Corinthians 2:12-17  Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthian congregation, “ Now God uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume … We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us.”

Psalm 42:1-11  God prospered David, whose respect soared as he proves himself a capable general and leader.  King Saul became increasingly jealous and hostile toward David to the point where the King attempts to kill him — countless times.  David, in hiding, cries out to God, “Why am I discouraged?  Why is my heart so sad?  I will put my hope in God!  I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!”

Proverbs 22:7  Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 23:1-27:23  Job fervently asks why God does not punish evil.  Friend Bildad responds, “God’s Ways are different from ours.  There is no comparison between God and His glory and us, mortals.”  Job finds renewed strength and faith.

2 Corinthians 1:12-2:11  Apostle Paul defends his ministry to the troubled Corinthian Church.  “It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us.  He has identified us as His own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment, guaranteeing everything He has promised us … When you forgive, I also forgive.  I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, so that satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.”

Psalm 41:1-13  King David exalts God and petitions for mercy, “Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The Lord rescues them when they are in trouble. The Lord protects them and keeps them alive.  Lord, have mercy on me.  Make me well again so I can pay them back!  I know You are pleased with me, for you have not let my enemies triumph over me.  You have preserved my life because I am innocent; You have brought me into your presence forever. Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting.  Amen!”

Proverbs 22:5-6  Corrupt people walk a thorny, treacherous road; whoever values life will avoid it.  Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 20:1-22:30  Job’s one friend tells Job to turn his back on God.  The other tells him God is punishing Job for his sins. Job is impatient with God but his reverence toward the Almighty remain the same.

2 Corinthians 1:1-11  Apostle Paul addresses the church of Corinth, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.

Psalm 40:11-17  King David continues to cry out to God for deliverance, “Lord, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me.  Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.  For troubles surround me—too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out …  Come quickly, Lord, and help me!  May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame … May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, ‘The Lord is great!'”

Proverbs 22:2-4  The Lord made the rich and the poor.  A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions.  The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.  True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 16:1-19:29   Job cries out to the Lord to deliver him from life’s excruciating miseries.  Job’s perseverance and unshakable faith in God under relentless trials — Job’s faithfulness and love for God —  are powerful testimonies.   But as for me, I know my Redeemer lives, and He will stand upon the earth at last.  And after my body has decayed,  yet in my body I will see God!  I will see Him for myself.  Yes, I will see Him with my own eyes.  I am overwhelmed at the thought!  “How dare you go on persecuting me, saying, ‘It’s his own fault’?  You should fear punishment yourselves, for your attitude deserves punishment.  Then you will know that there is indeed a judgment.  (16:25-29)

1 Corinthians 16:1-24  Apostle Paul instructs believers to offer their first fruit to God, do all things in love, and calls for support for brother Timothy, God’s faithful servant.  Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous.  Be strong.  And do everything with love. (16:13-14)

Psalm 40:1-10  God delivers King David from hardships.  The King exalts God.   O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us.  Your plans for us are too numerous to list.  You have no equal.  If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end.  (40:4-5)

Proverbs 22:1  Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 12:1-15:35  Job is Faithful to God. Despite excruciating trials — losing his servants, animals, and battling ailments — Job does not doubt God’s sovereignty. Job refuses to listen to friends who question God’s ways, “True wisdom and power are found in God;  counsel and understanding are His.  What He destroys cannot be rebuilt.  He uncovers mysteries hidden in darkness;  He brings light to the deepest gloom.  He builds up nations.  He destroys them.”

1 Corinthians 15:29-58  Apostle Paul on Death and Resurrection: We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! … Our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies … For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power.  But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.  So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

Psalm 39:1-13  King David cries out to God, “I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me … We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing …  And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?  My only hope is in You.  Rescue me from my rebellion.  Do not let fools mock me.”

Proverbs 21:30-31  No human wisdom or understanding or plan can stand against the Lord.  The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 8:1-11:20 Job’s well-meaning friends insist Job repent from his sins so that he may regain favor with God and escape excruciating hardships.  Job, who is blameless, insists “How can a mortal be righteous before God?” (Job 9:2)  If Job lifts his head high to advocate his righteousness, God would increase His anger against such pride.

1 Corinthians 15:1-28  Christ’s Resurrection & God’s Authority.  We, who belong to Adam will die; however, all belonging to Christ will be given new life.  At His return, Christ will be raised first, then His followers.  The end will come.  Christ must reign until He humbles all enemies beneath His feet.  The Son will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having destroyed  every ruler and authority and power; death, the last enemy. God, who reigns supreme, has put all things under the Son’s authority.  The Son will then put Himself under God, The Supreme Authority.

Psalm 38:1-22  King David pleads for God’s help.  I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done.  I have many aggressive enemies;  they hate me without reason.  They repay evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good. Do not abandon me, O Lord.  Do not stand at a distance, my God.   Come quickly,  O Lord my savior.

Proverbs 21:28-29  A false witness will be cut off, but a credible witness will be allowed to speak.  The wicked bluff their way through, but the virtuous think before they act.

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/22)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 4:1-7:21  Job’s friends give him plenty of bad advice. They mistakenly blame his sufferings–Job’s dead workers, dead animals, and illness–on his personal sins rather than God testing and growing Job.  Job cries out to God, “If I have sinned, what have I done to you?  Why make me your target?   Why not just forgive my sin and take away my guilt?  For soon I will lie down in the dust and die.   When you look for me, I will be gone.”

1 Corinthians 14:18-40  Apostle Paul encourages Christians, “My dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues.  But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.”

Psalm 37:30-40  Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace.  But the rebellious will be destroyed; they have no future.

Proverbs 21:27  The sacrifice of an evil person is detestable, especially when offered with wrong motives.

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/21)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 1:1-3:26    The Book of Job illustrates God’s sovereignty and faithfulness during a time of great suffering.  God tests Job’s faithfulness by allowing Satan to attack him. God told Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him” (1:12). Through Job’s trials, all is lost including his dead workers and farm animals, and his health.  Wife tells Job to curse God and commit suicide but he remains strong and faithful. “Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God” (1:22).

1 Corinthians 14:1-17  Apostle Paul clears up some of the confusion about practices of worship. He corrects difficult doctrines that had caused divisions–the use of spiritual gifts, and observing the Lord’s Supper. “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints” (14:33).  Paul also teaches, “Desire the gift of prophesy more than speaking in tongues for one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.  Let love be your highest goal!” (14:1)

Psalm 37:12-29  The Lord just laughs [at the evil doers]  for he sees their day of judgment coming. (37:13)   It is better to be godly and have little than to be evil and rich.  For the strength of the wicked will be shattered but the Lord takes care of the godly. (37:16-17)

Proverbs 21:25-26  Despite their desires, the lazy will come to ruin, for their hands refuse to work.  Some people are always greedy for more but the godly love to give!

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/20)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Esther 8:1-10:3  The Festival of Purim celebrates Queen Esther’s courage for saving her people.  Haman, the king’s high official, is hung by King Ahasuerus’ (Xerxes) men for plotting to kill the Jews, Queen Esther’s people.  The king gave Haman’s property to Esther.  He also issued a decree, allowing the Jews to unite to defend themselves.  Mordecai, the queen’s uncle, is appointed prime minister of Persia.  He was highly regarded by the Jewish people for serving and representing the people’s best interests.

1 Corinthians 12:27-13:13  If I do not have love, I gain nothing.  Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Psalm 37:1-11  Trust in the Lord and do good … and He will give you the desires of your heart.  Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret —it leads only to evil.  For those who are evil will be destroyed but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.  A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Proverbs 21:23-24  Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.  The proud and arrogant—“Mocker”—behaves with insolent fury.
