TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Song of Solomon 1:1-4:16  King Solomon and His New Bride Rejoice in Their Love.  Solomon, a son of King David became king.  While visiting a vineyard, Solomon is swept away by the young peasant woman working the vines.  The king seeks the woman’s hand in marriage.  Casting her insecurities aside, she eventually consents.  Solomon’s wife longed for the security of his presence.  The basis of true love is commitment.  A relationship built on true love is void of deceit, manipulation, or exploitation.

2 Corinthians 8:16-24  Apostle Paul Sends Cohort, Titus, to Receive Collection from the Corinthian Congregation.  Following the Lord’s examples, Christians are called to be generous; a stingy Christian should be extinct; however, sacrificial giving must be responsible.  Give until it hurts but not to the point where it hurts the financial needs of your family and relatives. Paul used every safeguard to maintain integrity in the collection of money for the Jerusalem church.  Christians must have the highest standard of financial responsibility.

Psalm 50:1-23  WISDOM: TO FEAR AND HONOR GOD.  Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:  Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation.

Proverbs 22:22-23  Advocate for the poor.  Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life.

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/20)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Esther 8:1-10:3  The Festival of Purim celebrates Queen Esther’s courage for saving her people.  Haman, the king’s high official, is hung by King Ahasuerus’ (Xerxes) men for plotting to kill the Jews, Queen Esther’s people.  The king gave Haman’s property to Esther.  He also issued a decree, allowing the Jews to unite to defend themselves.  Mordecai, the queen’s uncle, is appointed prime minister of Persia.  He was highly regarded by the Jewish people for serving and representing the people’s best interests.

1 Corinthians 12:27-13:13  If I do not have love, I gain nothing.  Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Psalm 37:1-11  Trust in the Lord and do good … and He will give you the desires of your heart.  Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret —it leads only to evil.  For those who are evil will be destroyed but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.  A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Proverbs 21:23-24  Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.  The proud and arrogant—“Mocker”—behaves with insolent fury.

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/19)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Esther 4:1-7:10  Queen Esther’s uncle, Mordecai, hears Haman’s plot to destroy all the Jews in Persia.  The queen outwits Haman, the king’s high official, and pleas to husband, King Ahasuerus, to protect the Jewish people from Haman’s wicked plan.  The king has Haman hung on the gallows Haman himself built to destroy the Jews.  Esther’s faith and courage saves her people.

1 Corinthians 12:1-26   It is the same God who does the work in all of us.  A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.  It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.  The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.  If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.

Psalm 36:1-12  God is loving, faithful, and just.  God detests evil and will defeat evil in His time.

Proverbs 21:21-22  Whoever pursues righteousness and unfailing love will find life, righteousness, and honor.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Esther 1:1-3:15  King Ahasuerus of Persia personally chose Esther to become his wife and queen.  The king was smitten by her beauty and intelligence.  Mordecai, Esther’s uncle, refuses to bow down to Haman, the king’s high official.  Angry prideful Haman vows to destroy Mordecai and his people, the Jews.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34  Apostle Paul instructs believers on the meaning of the Lord’s Supper.  This’ is not the time to feast & get drunk.  The Lord’s Supper is the time to reflect, remember, and proclaim God’s ultimate sacrifice for our sins.

Psalm 35:17-28  King David prays fervently for deliverance from his enemies; from their ploys to destroy him and his people.

Proverbs 21:19-20  It is better to live alone in the desert than with a quarrelsome, complaining wife.  The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/17)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Nehemiah 12:27-13:31  Dedication of Jerusalem’s Wall and Provision for Temple Worship

The rebuilding of the wall was not simply about brick and mortar but about reestablishing the Lord’s sovereignty.  The Levites exuberantly carried out the worship. That day they offered great sacrifices because God had filled them with great joy The women and children raised their happy voices with all the rest.  Jerusalem’s jubilation was heard far and wide. Judah was so appreciative of the priests and Levites and their service … conducting the worship of their God and the ritual of ceremonial cleansing in a way that would have made Kings David and his son Solomon proud.

1 Corinthians 11:1-16  Instructions for Public Worship – Don’t, by the way, read too much into the differences here between men and women. Neither man nor woman can go it alone or claim priority. Man was created first, as a beautiful shining reflection of God — that is true. But the head on a woman’s body clearly outshines in beauty the head of her “head,” her husband. The first woman came from man, true — but ever since then, every man comes from a woman! And since virtually everything comes from God let’s quit going through these “who’s first” routines.

Psalm 35:1-16  King David cries out to God for deliverance from his oppressors, “Lord, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?”

Proverbs 21:17-18  Those who love pleasure become poor.  The wicked are punished.

I Have Shed My Mask

The most exhausting thing in life, I have discovered, is being insincere.  That is why so much of social life is exhausting; one is wearing a mask.  I have shed my mask.

Perhaps middle age is, or should be, a period of shedding; ambitions, material accumulations, possessions, and the ego.  One’s pride, one’s false ambitions, one’s mask, one’s armor.  Was that armor not put on to protect one from the competitive world? If one ceases to compete, does one need it? Perhaps one can at last in middle age, if not earlier, be completely oneself.  And what a liberation that would be!           (Anne Lindbergh’s Gift From the Sea)

Democracy and Islamic Sharia Law — Can They Coexist?

You decide:

  • Democracy —  a : government by the people; especially rule of the majority b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections
  • Sharia — Islamic law based on the Koran.
Imposes theocracy over democracy, its abuse of human rights, its institutionalized discrimination, its denial of human dignity and individual autonomy, its punishment of alternative lifestyle choices, and for the severity of its punishments (Iran, Afghanistan’s Taliban — you get the picture). (Full Story)

An individual who chooses to immigrate to another country should respect the language, custom, and the culture of his adopted nation; just as a guest would respect the ways of his hosts when invited to their home.

Preserve your culture at home.  Outside of the home, assimilate.  It was your choice to come to our country.  No one dragged you here. (Full Story)

Democracy and Islamic Sharia Law will never coexist. (See also Why I Renounced Jihad).

Stop Aging — Wine, Dine, Socialize!

Good food, good friends — fun, relaxing, energizing!  How about a drink or two?  One or two glasses of red wine each day may protect you against cardiovascular disease.  (Full Story)

And exercise?

Ugh!  Ugh!  Ugh!

I want to eat like a horse and stay fit!  THAT, for me, is eternal bliss!!!

I absolutely dreaded the “E” word … until I read the following:

Most aging is just the dry rot we program into our cells by sedentary living, junk food, and stress.

When you don’t exercise, your muscles let out a steady trickle of chemicals that tell every cell to decay, day after day after day.

Yikes!  What the hec does this mean?

Dr. Henry S. Lodge, a faculty of Columbia Medical School and co-author of Younger Next Year (Workman) summarizes concepts on healthy living:

  • Animals face two great cellular challenges — growth and decay.
  • Motion, not food, controls our system.  When we exercise, the muscle releases substances that tell your cells to grow.
  • Sedentary muscles let out a steady trickle of chemicals that whisper to every cell to decay, day after day!  Exercise and cells get stronger; sit down and they decay.
  • Emotion (the master signal to our cells) is more important than exercise.  Anger, stress, and loneliness “melt” our bodies the same way sedentary lifestyle does.
  • Optimism, love, and community trigger the process of growth, building our bodies, hearts, and minds (we are social creatures) (Full Story)

I guess I’ll get off my chair and go for a quick walk.

Will you join me? 🙂

Woman of Virtue

Thank you Lord for your infinite wisdom!

A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.
She gets up while it’s still dark; providing food for her family and portions for her servant girls.
She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
Her husband is respected at the city gate, taking his seat among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
