TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Ecclesiastes 10:1-12:14  Wisdom for Life.  A wise person chooses the right road; a fool takes the wrong one.  If your boss is angry at you, don’t quit!  A quiet spirit can overcome even great mistakes.  Kings and rulers make a grave mistake when they give great authority to fools and low positions to the wise … Conclusion: Fear God and obey His commands, for this is everyone’s duty.  God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, good and bad.

2 Corinthians 8:1-15  Give joyfully.  Your giving should not make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. There should be some equality.  Right now you have plenty and can help those in need. Later, they’ll have plenty and can share when you’re in need. In this way, things will be equal.

Psalm 49:1-20  Faith vs. Wealth.  In the morning the godly will rule over the rich.  The rich bodies will rot in the grave, far from their grand estates.  But as for me, God will redeem my life … When the rich die, they take nothing.  In this life, they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success.  But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day.  People who boast of their wealth will die, like animals.

Proverbs 22:20-21  Sayings of the Wise.  I have written thirty sayings for you,  filled with advice and knowledge.  In this way, you may know the truth and take an accurate report to those who sent you.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Ecclesiastes 1:1-3:22  Apart from God, life is empty and unsatisfying.  Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. (12:13)  King Solomon, the son of great King David, pursues worldly pleasures.  At last, He realizes and laments life’s fleeting nature and its inequities, “Learning, pleasure, work, laughter–all is vanity.  People live, work hard, and die, only to leave their belongings to someone else; the wicked prosper over the righteous, the poor are oppressed.”  King Solomon concludes, “Fear God and keep His Commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” (12:13)

2 Corinthians 6:1-13  Apostle Paul fervently addresses the fence-sitters of the Corinthian Church–those not yet born-again–to open their hearts and accept God.  God’s power is working in us … We serve God whether people honor, despise, slander, or praise us … We have been beaten but we have not been killed.  Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others …  Oh, dear Corinthian friends! We have spoken honestly with you, and our hearts are open to you. There is no lack of love on our part, but you have withheld your love from us.  I am asking you to respond as if you were my own children. Open your hearts to us!

Psalm 46:1-11  The God of Israel is our fortress.  The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us.  God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.  So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.  Let the oceans roar and foam.  Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!  “Be still, and know that I am God!  I will be honored by every nation.  I will be honored throughout the world.”

Proverbs 22:15  Spare the rod, spoil the child.  A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness,  but physical discipline will drive it far away.  (Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them. [Proverbs 13:24])

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 40:1-42:17  God’s Divine Purpose — All things work together for our good and His glory.  Job was the Lord’s servant who delighted in His ways. The Lord allowed Job to be tested and Job overcame, not by works, but by the Lord’s grace. In the end, the Lord’s favor upon Job saved him.  Job sought out the Lord continually, crying for help and justice.   Despite all trials, Job knew God loved Him, as he quickly repented upon hearing the Lord.  Job’s friends, however, could only see the surface.  Misfortunes, to them, meant a wicked heart. God is merciful and loving. Affliction is not God’s judgment.  He has a purpose for everything.  Let us trust in God who works all things for His Divine Glory.

2 Corinthians 5:11-21   Christians are God’s Ambassadors.  Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthian Church, “We are God’s Ambassadors.  Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard with a sincere heart to persuade others. Christ’s love controls us.  Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.  He died for everyone so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.”

Psalm 45:1-17  The Wedding Psalm– The promise of marriage is intimacy and security.  These two are present in our relationship with the Lord.  The Psalm closes on such note—leading us in the security that we enjoy with the Lord in His palace.

Proverbs 22:14  Immorality and God’s Wrath.  The mouth of an immoral woman is a dangerous trap; those who anger the Lord will fall into the trap.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 31:1-33:33  Job continues to moan about his suffering and how the Lord does not answer.  According to Job, he has pursued the Lord, feared Him, and kept His ways.  Job’s three friends stop talking to him. Elihu, his fourth friend, also argues it is not right for Job to say he is not without sin.

2 Corinthians 3:1-18  Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthian congregation, “God has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life …And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

Psalm 43:1-5  King David, in hiding, is discouraged but regains composure by choosing to place his hope and praise in God!

Proverbs 22:8-9  Those who plant injustice will harvest disaster and their reign of terror will come to an end.  Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 23:1-27:23  Job fervently asks why God does not punish evil.  Friend Bildad responds, “God’s Ways are different from ours.  There is no comparison between God and His glory and us, mortals.”  Job finds renewed strength and faith.

2 Corinthians 1:12-2:11  Apostle Paul defends his ministry to the troubled Corinthian Church.  “It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us.  He has identified us as His own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment, guaranteeing everything He has promised us … When you forgive, I also forgive.  I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, so that satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.”

Psalm 41:1-13  King David exalts God and petitions for mercy, “Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The Lord rescues them when they are in trouble. The Lord protects them and keeps them alive.  Lord, have mercy on me.  Make me well again so I can pay them back!  I know You are pleased with me, for you have not let my enemies triumph over me.  You have preserved my life because I am innocent; You have brought me into your presence forever. Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting.  Amen!”

Proverbs 22:5-6  Corrupt people walk a thorny, treacherous road; whoever values life will avoid it.  Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 20:1-22:30  Job’s one friend tells Job to turn his back on God.  The other tells him God is punishing Job for his sins. Job is impatient with God but his reverence toward the Almighty remain the same.

2 Corinthians 1:1-11  Apostle Paul addresses the church of Corinth, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.

Psalm 40:11-17  King David continues to cry out to God for deliverance, “Lord, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me.  Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.  For troubles surround me—too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out …  Come quickly, Lord, and help me!  May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame … May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, ‘The Lord is great!'”

Proverbs 22:2-4  The Lord made the rich and the poor.  A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions.  The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.  True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/21)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Job 1:1-3:26    The Book of Job illustrates God’s sovereignty and faithfulness during a time of great suffering.  God tests Job’s faithfulness by allowing Satan to attack him. God told Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him” (1:12). Through Job’s trials, all is lost including his dead workers and farm animals, and his health.  Wife tells Job to curse God and commit suicide but he remains strong and faithful. “Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God” (1:22).

1 Corinthians 14:1-17  Apostle Paul clears up some of the confusion about practices of worship. He corrects difficult doctrines that had caused divisions–the use of spiritual gifts, and observing the Lord’s Supper. “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints” (14:33).  Paul also teaches, “Desire the gift of prophesy more than speaking in tongues for one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.  Let love be your highest goal!” (14:1)

Psalm 37:12-29  The Lord just laughs [at the evil doers]  for he sees their day of judgment coming. (37:13)   It is better to be godly and have little than to be evil and rich.  For the strength of the wicked will be shattered but the Lord takes care of the godly. (37:16-17)

Proverbs 21:25-26  Despite their desires, the lazy will come to ruin, for their hands refuse to work.  Some people are always greedy for more but the godly love to give!

READ THE BIBLE IN 365 DAYS: SHORT AND CONCISE (8/14)

TODAY’S SCRIPTURES:

Nehemiah 7:73-9:21    True faith leads to action.  The rebuilding of the wall was not simply about brick and mortar but about reestablishing the Lord’s sovereignty.  Ezra preaches to the returned exiles, marking the outbreak of spiritual revival — public proclamation of Scriptures, feasting, fasting, confession, prayer, worshipful recital of God’s ongoing deliverance for Israel, and God’s people’s humble plea for forgiveness and restoration.

1 Corinthians 9:1-18  Apostle Paul gives up his rights i.e., payment for preaching.  “God has given me this sacred trust.  My pay is the opportunity to preach the Good News without charging anyone.”

Psalm 31:12-22  Our hope is in you alone.  But the Lord watches over those who fear Him,  those who rely on His unfailing love.  He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine.  We put our hope in the Lord.  He is our help and our shield

Proverbs 21:11-12  Become wise.  God will punish the wicked.  If you punish a mocker, the simpleminded become wise; if you instruct the wise, they will be all the wiser.  The Righteous One knows what is going on in the homes of the wicked; He will bring disaster on them.

I’m Spending My Kids’ Inheritence

How would you respond to this bumper sticker — “Right on!” or “How selfish!”

Billionaire Warren Buffett will say “Right on!” every time.  Why?

“In life, you’re not entitled to a free ride.” ”Money or life?  I chose life.” “Life is what you make it .”

Do you know of a family or two who no longer speak to one another after fighting over their inheritance?  If parents leave nothing, children may resent mom and dad.  So what?!  They’re already at a much better place.  Resent all you want.

More importantly, families who continue to inhabit the land of the living will have an ongoing relationship — birthday parties, Thanksgiving dinners, and all that jazz!

“Give enough [to your children] but not enough to do nothing.”

Mr. Buffet, you are brilliant!
